What is the Pomodoro Calculator and How Does It Work?

The Pomodoro Calculator plans out a focus session using the Pomodoro Technique - alternating work intervals with short breaks, and a longer break after a set number of cycles. It totals your focus time, break time, and projects when you will finish.

Calculation Formula
Total Time = (Sessions × Work Minutes) + (Short Breaks × Short Break Minutes) + (Long Breaks × Long Break Minutes)

Total focus time is the number of work sessions multiplied by session length. Break time adds up short breaks between sessions plus a longer break after every set number of sessions (typically every 4th session).

Where:
Work Session= Length of one focus interval, typically 25 minutes
Short / Long Break= Break length between sessions and after a full cycle
Sessions Before Long Break= How many work sessions occur before a long break (typically 4)
Worked Calculation Examples
Standard 8-Session Block
Input:8 sessions, 25 min work, 5 min short break, 15 min long break, 4 sessions per cycle
Output:4h 5m total (3h 20m focus + 45m breaks)

8×25=200 min focus; 6 short breaks (30 min) + 1 long break (15 min) = 45 min breaks; total = 245 min = 4h 5m.

Short Study Block
Input:4 sessions, 25 min work, 5 min short break, 15 min long break
Output:1h 55m total (1h 40m focus + 15m breaks)

4×25=100 min focus; with only 4 sessions, the long break threshold (every 4th gap) is not yet reached, so all 3 gaps between sessions are short breaks: 3×5=15 min; total = 115 min = 1h 55m.

Common Real-World Use Cases

Study Session Planning

Plan how many Pomodoro cycles fit into an available study block before an exam.

Deep Work Scheduling

Structure a focused work block with built-in breaks to sustain concentration over several hours.

Meeting-Free Time Blocking

Estimate a finish time for a planned number of focus sessions to communicate availability to others.

How to Use the Pomodoro Technique Calculator
  1. 1Set your work session length (default 25 minutes) and short/long break lengths.
  2. 2Set how many sessions occur before a long break (default 4).
  3. 3Enter your target number of sessions.
  4. 4View total focus time, total break time, and an estimated finish time if you provide a start time.
Pro Tips & Suggestions
  • •The classic Pomodoro Technique uses 25-minute work sessions with 5-minute short breaks and a 15-30 minute long break every 4 sessions.
  • •Enter a start time to see a projected finish time for your whole planned session block.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
  • •Expecting the total duration to equal sessions x work length. The total also includes every break between sessions, so 8 x 25-minute sessions is 3h 20m of focus but 4h 5m of elapsed time - budget for the breaks when planning around a hard stop.
  • •Setting "Sessions per Long Break" higher than your total session count. If the long-break threshold is never reached, every gap between sessions is a short break and no long break is included in the total.
